This Exhibition gathered 70 pieces of works on paper by 12 artists from around the world. From breath-takingly meticulous dry-point stippling by Karl Nelson, to cutting edge mixed-media works combining hand-pulled print, drawing elements and digital output by Simona Prive; From repetitive abstract works constructed of simple geometric lines and shapes by Sujin Shin and Alex Pena, to highly realistic lithography depicting 3D porcelain-slip sculptures by Yijin Kim; From miniature graphite drawings which reflect the universe beyond by Scott Espeseth, to monumental installation works by Daniel Rante and Brian James Pries; From unconventional recycling of past installation projects by Eric Saline, to soft and serene lithographs and etchings by Wang Dannan, Zhou Yue and waverly. Almost all of the artists have lived and made works in another culture apart from their birth country, which is reflected in the collection’s diversity and versatility. From here, we hope to open up a channel for art lovers and collectors to learn about every aspect of printmaking. In the coming weeks we shall be hosting a series of talks and workshops on printmaking, covering the area of history, techniques, outstanding artists and their artworks, as well as in-depth education on the appreciation and collecting of prints. It is our wish to establish Huangpu Art Space as the center for studying and making of fine art printmaking, and a space for contemporary art exhibition.
Curatorial Notes:
Huangpu Village, formerly known as Whampoa, is an ancient harbor dated as far back as the Southern Song Dynasty (12th to 13th century), and has been instrumental in establishing the city of Guangzhou (formerly known as Canton, now the 3rd largest city in China) as a major international port in the 19th century. Canton is known to have exported the largest population of Chinese overseas, first as hard laborers in the 19th century, and as merchants who took roots in all parts of the world, sprouting Chinatowns all over. Up until recently, Cantonese was the most spoken language among overseas Chinese.
For me, a global nomad who had spent half of her life abroad, finally returning to my father’s ancestry home of Canton this summer, it’s hard to find appropriate words to express how I feel. All I know is, I am home. To commemorate this emotional return, I would like to devote this inaugurating exhibition at Muk Gallery to “Home”, a word that touches the heart and soul of even the most seasoned traveler, the most hardy expatriate. I hope, no matter for those who never left, or those who have not returned, there’s always a place of safety and comfort in yourself.
I hereby devote our inauguration exhibition to our forefathers who left their homeland behind, traveled far and wide in the open world to fight for a better chance in life; to fellow global nomads, who explore the world beyond our knowledge with courage and endurance; to everyone who dares to look into our heart and soul searching for a true answer to life.
